January 4 was National Missouri Day, and around here, that feels a little extra special — because Missouri is home.
While my husband may be a transplant from another state, I’m Missouri born and raised, and this is where we’ve raised our family, explored the backroads, and built a lifetime of memories. From the Ozark hills to the big city skylines, there’s something truly special about the Show-Me State — and it deserves a spot on every traveler’s list.
So, in honor of National Missouri Day, let’s celebrate some of the many reasons Missouri makes a fantastic destination for families, outdoor enthusiasts, and curious explorers alike!
Branson: Family Fun with a Southern Twist
If you’re looking for classic, feel-good family fun, Branson has you covered.
- Silver Dollar City – Step back in time at this 1880s-style theme park filled with rides, shows, and crafts (and yes, the food is amazing!).
- Branson Landing – Shop, dine, and enjoy the fountain show along Lake Taneycomo.
- The Lakes – Boating, tubing, fishing, or just enjoying the views — Branson’s lake life is pure relaxation.
And don’t forget nearby Springfield, home to the original Bass Pro Shops, the Wonders of Wildlife Aquarium, and even Fantastic Caverns — America’s only ride-through cave! Plus, with the new Buc-ee’s and a convenient airport, Springfield is the perfect gateway to all your Ozark adventures.
Kansas City: Big Flavor, Big Fun
Head west and you’ll find Kansas City, where the Chiefs Kingdom runs strong and the BBQ runs even stronger!
Some KC must-dos:
- Union Station – A stunning landmark with museums, shops, and fun for all ages.
- The National WWI Museum and Memorial – A powerful and moving stop for history lovers.
- The Plaza – Beautiful fountains, unique shops, and lights that make it magical any time of year.
- And just across the river, don’t miss some of Kansas’ charming towns and attractions — perfect for a quick day trip!
Lake of the Ozarks & Hannibal: Missouri’s Storybook Side
Few places say “Missouri vacation” quite like Lake of the Ozarks — a massive playground for boaters, anglers, and anyone who loves the water. From cozy cabins to floating restaurants, there’s something for everyone here.
Further north, step into a storybook in Hannibal, the boyhood home of Mark Twain. Explore caves, riverboat rides, and museums that bring his adventures to life. It’s a charming mix of history, nostalgia, and small-town heart.
St. Louis: Gateway to Great Memories
End your journey on the eastern side of the state in St. Louis — home to the iconic Gateway Arch, a free world-class zoo, and the Science Center, which families love. Add in delicious food, baseball at Busch Stadium, and the vibrant neighborhoods, and you’ve got a city that always delivers fun.
Northern Missouri & The Great Outdoors
Missouri isn’t just cities and shows — the northern countryside is full of surprises, too. From rivers perfect for floating and kayaking, to quiet trails and state parks where you can disconnect and breathe in the beauty of the Midwest, this is the Missouri that captures your heart in the simplest ways.
So, here’s to the Show-Me State — where the people are friendly, the scenery is gorgeous, and adventure is always just down the road.
