The holiday season is here — the lights are twinkling, the gift bags are rustling, and millions of people are getting ready to hit the road to spend time with loved ones. If you’re one of them, you’re in good company.
According to this year’s travel forecasts, more than 109 million Americans are expected to travel by car between December 20 and January 1. That’s nearly 90% of all holiday travelers — a record-setting year. With that many people out on the road, I wanted to share some genuine, heartfelt road-trip safety reminders that come straight from experience (and a few from my dad).
Because at the end of the day, nothing is more important than getting to your destination safely so you can enjoy the magic of the season with the people you love.
Be a Brake-Light Watcher (My Dad’s Favorite Tip)
I grew up hearing this one every time I got behind the wheel: “Pay attention to the brake lights ahead of the car directly in front of you.”
It sounds simple, but it’s one of the most valuable habits I’ve learned. Watching the flow of traffic several cars ahead gives you more reaction time. It reduces the chance of sudden stops — and it might just give you those extra seconds that prevent an accident.
Thanks, Dad. Still listening.
Know the Weather — Not Just for Where You Are, But Everywhere You’re Going
Holiday travel often means unpredictable weather: snowstorms, icy roads, fog, wind… the whole winter assortment.
Before you leave, check the forecast for:
-Your starting point
-Areas you’ll drive through
-Your final destination
A little planning can help you avoid dangerous conditions or reschedule travel by a few hours to stay safe.
Charge Your Phone & Share Your Plan
A dead phone on a road trip is… not ideal.
Make sure you:
-Fully charge your phone before leaving
-Pack a car charger or portable battery
-Turn on Life360 (if you use it)
If you don’t use Life360, simply tell someone:
-Where you’re going
-Which route you’re taking
-When you expect to arrive
It takes less than a minute and gives your loved ones peace of mind.
Get Your Vehicle Checked Before a Long Drive
If you’re heading out on a longer road trip, I highly recommend giving your vehicle a little extra attention — especially during such a busy travel season.
-Oil change
-Tire rotation
-Check tire pressure & tread
-Top off fluids
-Replace worn wiper blades
It’s also a very good idea to keep a physical or digital copy of your car insurance card easily accessible — just in case.
Need Lodging Booked? Or a Safe Space From Family Drama?
If your holiday plans include a road trip and you need a hotel booked for the drive, I’d love to help.
And if your holiday plans include… let’s say… “unique family dynamics,” and you need a last-minute escape route or peaceful place to stay — I can handle that too. No judgment. We’ve all been there.
And remember — using a travel agent costs you ABSOLUTELY nothing.
I’m here to make travel easier, safer, and stress-free.
Final Thoughts
So as you:
-Wrap up that last-minute Christmas shopping,
–Pack your bags,
-And get ready to hit the road…
Don’t forget the most important thing: arrive safely and enjoy the moments that matter.
And if anything goes wrong — flat tire, traffic jam, delayed departure — just take a deep breath and remember:
At least you’re not the one who forgot the rolls for Christmas dinner.
There’s always one in every family… and if it’s you this year, blame the traffic.
Safe travels, friends.
