If you’re familiar with Jeep culture, you’ve probably seen it — rubber ducks sitting proudly on dashboards. Being “ducked” by another Jeep owner has become a fun, unexpected tradition.
When we owned our Jeep, we were ducked exactly one time. And honestly? We were so excited to get our one and only duck.
Depending on who you ask, that might be unfortunate… or fortunate. But for us, that little duck felt like a badge of honor.
At the time, I had no idea that ducks were about to become part of another travel tradition we’d grow to love even more.
Discovering Ducks at Sea
When we were preparing for our first cruise, I started reading about cruise tips and traditions — and that’s when I learned that many cruise lines allow passengers to hide rubber ducks around the ship for others to find.
I was immediately excited.
As a family, we love scavenger hunts and geocaching, so I knew this would be right up our alley. It felt like a floating treasure hunt — and who doesn’t love that?
The Duck Hunt Begins
It was around our second day onboard when we started spotting ducks — and I can’t even begin to explain how excited my ten-year-old was every single time he found one.
Decks, hallways, tucked-away corners — suddenly every walk around the ship became an adventure. We definitely got our steps in searching high and low for hidden ducks.
It added such a fun layer to the cruise — one that didn’t cost anything, didn’t require reservations, and created pure joy.
Ducks That Came Home With Us
Yes — the ducks traveled home with us.
They made it safely into our checked bag and are now living somewhere in my ten-year-old’s room. And honestly, that feels exactly right.
Even better?
We have another cruise coming up, and this time we plan to bring our own ducks to hide — because half the fun is knowing someone else will feel that same excitement when they find one.
Fun Rubber Duck Travel Tidbits
A few fun facts that make rubber ducks even more travel-worthy:
- Rubber ducks have been part of large-scale scavenger hunts and charity races around the world
- They’ve famously traveled oceans after falling from cargo ships, helping scientists study ocean currents
- On cruises, ducks often include notes sharing where the traveler is from — making them tiny international ambassadors
It’s funny how such a small, simple thing can create connection, excitement, and shared memories — whether on land or at sea.
Why I Love Travel Traditions Like This
Travel isn’t just about destinations.
It’s about moments, shared laughter, and little surprises that make a trip unforgettable.
So this National Rubber Duck Day, I’m smiling about Jeep dashboards, cruise ship hallways, and a ten-year-old’s excitement over finding a tiny duck in the most unexpected place.
If you’re planning a cruise — or just love travel traditions — maybe consider packing a few ducks. You never know who you’ll make smile.
