Why The Natural State Will Always Hold a Special Place in Our Hearts

Arkansas isn’t just a destination for our family — it’s part of our story.

It’s the place my husband grew up, the home of his best childhood memories, and a state that has slowly become woven into our own family’s journey. To hear him talk, he truly had the best childhood — and every time we travel back to his hometown of Piggott, I joke that we’re taking a trip down memory lane.

But in all seriousness, Arkansas is filled with meaningful places, charming towns, and unforgettable experiences — from quiet Northeast Arkansas to romantic mountain escapes and outdoor adventure.

Piggott, Arkansas: A Small Town with a Big Story

Piggott may be a small town, but it holds a unique place in American history.

Known as the town where Ernest Hemingway wrote A Farewell to Arms, Piggott is also where Andy Griffith filmed the movie A Face in the Crowd. Walking around town feels peaceful and unhurried — the kind of place where stories linger and history feels close.

If you live near Northeast Arkansas or find yourself traveling nearby, Piggott is worth a stop:

  • Visit the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum
  • Walk the small town square
  • Soak in the quiet charm that makes places like this so special

Sometimes, the best travel moments come from the places that aren’t trying to be anything more than exactly what they are.

A One-of-a-Kind Experience: Crater of Diamonds State Park

Arkansas is home to one of the most unique attractions in the country — Crater of Diamonds State Park, where visitors can actually mine for real diamonds.

Yes, really.

Guests can dig, sift, and search — and if you’re lucky enough, you might just find something worth keeping. It’s one of those experiences that’s fun whether you strike it rich or not, and it’s perfect for families, couples, and curious travelers.

Hot Springs: History, Spas & Horse Racing

If horse racing is your thing, don’t forget Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Hot Springs is known for:

  • Bathhouse Row & thermal springs
  • Historic spa experiences
  • Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort, where you can try your luck at the races

It’s a destination that blends relaxation, history, and excitement — making it a great stop whether you’re visiting for a weekend or building a longer Arkansas itinerary.

Eureka Springs: Romance, Relaxation & a Little Mystery

On the opposite side of the state sits Eureka Springs, one of the most magical towns we’ve ever visited — and the place we were lucky enough to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary.

Eureka Springs feels like:

  • A town built into a cliff
  • A real-life version of a Department 56 Christmas village
  • A place where every corner feels charming and intentional

It’s perfect for:

  • Destination weddings (hello, the stunning Glass Chapel)
  • Girls trips with spa days and shopping
  • Couples looking for a romantic getaway

And of course, you can’t forget the legendary Crescent Hotel — famous for its haunted history and incredible views.

The Natural State: An Outdoor Paradise

Arkansas truly lives up to its nickname, The Natural State.

From hiking and camping to kayaking, fishing, and off-roading, there’s no shortage of outdoor adventure:

  • Mount Petit Jean State Park — hiking trails, overlooks, waterfalls, and camping
  • Rivers and lakes for kayaking and fishing
  • Trails for off-roading and exploring

Mount Petit Jean is also home to a huge annual car show, making it a must-visit for any car enthusiast.

And of course, Arkansas is proudly home to the Razorbacks — and my in-laws are huge fans, which makes visiting during game season even more fun.

Why Arkansas Will Always Matter to Us

Arkansas is proof that travel doesn’t have to be flashy to be meaningful.

It’s family memories.

It’s anniversaries.

It’s small towns and big stories.

It’s quiet moments and outdoor adventure.

If Arkansas is on your list — whether for romance, history, outdoor fun, or a meaningful return to your roots — I’d love to help you plan it.
