California. Even though I haven’t yet had the pleasure of visiting myself, part of my heart feels like it belongs there — because my kids have gotten to explore it in ways that made it unforgettable. My middle son and my oldest were able to go together and experience some truly incredible natural and city destinations: from the giant trees of the Sequoia National Forest to the dramatic landscapes of Yosemite, the clear waters of Lake Tahoe, and the vibrant energy of San Francisco, with plenty of memories made in the charming town of Petaluma.
There’s so much packed into this one state — from national parks and coastlines to theme parks and world-famous attractions — that it truly has something for every kind of traveler.

Natural Wonders & National Parks
California boasts more national parks than any other state — nine official national parks, each with its own unique landscapes, from giant trees and granite cliffs to deserts and coastal wilderness. Some of the highlights include Yosemite National Park, known for towering granite formations like Half Dome and Yosemite Falls; Sequoia National Park, home to the largest trees on Earth; Kings Canyon’s scenic byways and deep valleys; Redwood National and State Parks where the tallest trees stand; Joshua Tree’s otherworldly desert scenery; and Death Valley, the lowest and hottest location in the U.S. — just to name a few.
Between the waterfalls and meadows of Yosemite, the ancient groves of giant sequoias, and the rugged beauty of the deserts and redwoods, outdoor lovers will find endless opportunities for hiking, scenic drives, photography, camping, and connection with nature.
Cities & Iconic Experiences
California’s cities are legendary. San Francisco offers views of the Golden Gate Bridge, historic cable cars, Alcatraz Island, and a rich cultural scene. The coastal Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1) delivers one of the most scenic drives in the U.S., with dramatic ocean vistas, Big Sur, and coastal towns along the way.
Families can spend a day at Walt Disney World’s West Coast counterpart — Disneyland in Anaheim or explore the world-famous San Diego Zoo, known as one of the best in the world. There are beaches up and down the coast from San Diego to Santa Barbara to Half Moon Bay, offering sand, surf, and coastal charm for visitors of all ages.
Lake Tahoe straddles the California-Nevada border with crystal clear waters, mountain views, and outdoor activities year-round — from summer lakeside adventures to winter ski trips and everything in between.
Petaluma & Northern Coastal Charm
One of the places my kids visited was Petaluma, a charming Sonoma County town known for its historic downtown, world-class food scene, regional wines and beers, and scenic riverfront.
Just west of town is the United States Coast Guard Training Center Petaluma, which serves as the Coast Guard’s largest West Coast training facility — training leaders and specialists across a wide range of fields and contributing to the community in unique ways.
Petaluma also offers:
- Picturesque parks with hiking and wildlife areas like Helen Putnam Regional Park and Shollenberger Park, a top birding destination.
- A vibrant downtown filled with boutique shops, local art, and farm-to-table restaurants.
Whether you’re stopping through on a Bay Area getaway or using it as a base for exploring Sonoma and Napa wine country, Petaluma is a delightful place for food lovers, history lovers, and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

For Families
California has something for kids and adults alike — theme parks, beaches, interactive museums, and national parks with accessible trails and scenic overlooks. The diversity of experiences makes it ideal for families looking to build lifelong memories.
For Couples
Whether it’s a romantic drive down Highway 1, wine tasting in Sonoma and Napa, a sunset over Lake Tahoe, or a quiet picnic among giant sequoias, California delivers unforgettable moments for couples seeking adventure or relaxation.

For Young Adults & Friends
From city nightlife and music festivals to surf culture in Southern California, outdoor adventures in Tahoe and Joshua Tree, and coastal road trips, California offers vibrant experiences for friends traveling together.
For Older Explorers
California’s accessibility to scenic drives, historical sites, national parks, and coastal towns makes it a welcoming destination for travelers who want beauty without extreme physical demands — plus world-class museums, food scenes, and cultural attractions.
