Minnesota surprised me in the best way.

I traveled to Minneapolis for a work conference, and my husband and kids were able to tag along. Back home, it was over 100 degrees and humid, but in Minnesota? The weather was cool and absolutely perfect.

It felt like a breath of fresh air — literally.

Minneapolis: Walkable & Easy to Explore

One of the things we loved most about Minneapolis was how easy it was to walk around and explore.

While I was at my conference during the day, my husband and kids explored the city. They wandered, took in the sights, and enjoyed simply being somewhere different.

We also found some great food — and if you ever find yourself there, Hell’s Kitchen is a must. It’s known for bold flavors and a fun atmosphere that made it memorable for all of us.

Mall of America: More Than Shopping

We spent an entire day at the Mall of America — and while we are not big shoppers, we had a blast.

The highlight for us wasn’t the stores. It was the indoor amusement park (Nickelodeon Universe) right inside the mall. We walked the mall, rode rides, explored, and stayed until they closed the doors.

It was one of those unexpected family days that turned into a core memory.

The Mall of America also includes:

  • An aquarium
  • Mini golf
  • Escape rooms
  • Entertainment venues
  • Hundreds of dining options

It’s truly an experience beyond retail.

Beyond Minneapolis: The Land of 10,000 Lakes

Minnesota is known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” — and technically, it actually has more than 11,000 lakes.

If you love:

  • Boating
  • Fishing
  • Kayaking
  • Lake cabins
  • Quiet waterfront mornings

Minnesota delivers.

Some notable areas to explore:

Lake Minnetonka

Close to Minneapolis, great for boating and scenic lake days.

Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness

A dream for outdoor lovers, offering canoe routes, camping, and untouched wilderness.

North Shore of Lake Superior

Stunning cliffs, waterfalls, scenic drives, and charming small towns like Duluth.

Culture & City Experiences

Minnesota blends outdoor beauty with culture.

  • Minneapolis Sculpture Garden — home to the iconic Spoonbridge and Cherry
  • Walker Art Center
  • Professional sports teams
  • Theater and live music
  • Farmers markets and seasonal festivals

It’s a state that feels balanced — urban energy without being overwhelming.

For Families

Minnesota works beautifully for families:

  • Indoor attractions like Mall of America
  • Lakeside adventures
  • Outdoor parks
  • Museums and zoos
  • Seasonal winter activities (if you embrace the cold!)

For Couples

Couples can enjoy:

  • Lake cabin retreats
  • Scenic drives along Lake Superior
  • Boutique dining in Minneapolis
  • Cozy fall getaways with colorful leaves

For Outdoor Lovers

From canoeing in the Boundary Waters to hiking state parks and exploring waterfalls along the North Shore, Minnesota is ideal for those who want fresh air and wide-open space.

Why Minnesota Stands Out

What I appreciated most about Minnesota was how comfortable it felt.

It was:

  • Walkable
  • Clean
  • Scenic
  • Easy to navigate
  • Cooler when we needed it most

Minnesota may not always be the first state people mention when planning travel — but it absolutely deserves a spot on the list.

If you’re thinking about a city trip, lake escape, or a mix of both, I’d love to help you plan it.

Using a travel agent costs you absolutely nothing.
