One thing we always try to do before traveling is research — and then research some more. That usually includes things like excursions, weather, packing lists, and local food. But another important part of planning a trip is checking health recommendations for where you’re going.
For our upcoming trip, my husband took the lead on this part and checked the CDC’s Travelers’ Health website to see if there were any recommended vaccines for the places we’ll be visiting.
Vaccination is a personal decision, and everyone should make the choice that feels right for them and their family. But it’s still important to know what the recommendations are before you travel so you can make an informed decision.
Why It’s Important to Check Before Traveling
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), travelers should make sure they are up to date on routine vaccines and review destination-specific recommendations before traveling internationally.
Depending on where you’re traveling, the CDC may recommend vaccines such as:
- Hepatitis A
- Hepatitis B
- Typhoid
- Polio booster
- Other vaccines depending on the region
The CDC also recommends scheduling a pre-travel consultation with a healthcare provider 4–6 weeks before travel so there is enough time to receive recommended vaccines or medications if needed.
What We Learned for Our Upcoming Trip
When my husband checked the CDC recommendations for the places we’ll be visiting, we noticed a few vaccines listed as recommended for travelers in certain regions.
These included:
- Typhoid vaccine
- Hepatitis A
- Hepatitis B (if not already vaccinated)
- Polio booster
Again, these are recommendations depending on destination, and it’s always best to discuss these with a healthcare provider before traveling.
Travel Planning Isn’t Just About Flights and Hotels
When we think about travel planning, we usually think about destinations, activities, and packing lists.
But good planning also includes:
- Checking health recommendations
- Understanding local medical resources
- Preparing medications and travel insurance if needed
A little preparation ahead of time can help make travel smoother and more enjoyable.
Final Thoughts
Travel is one of my favorite things in the world. Exploring new places, cultures, and experiences is incredibly rewarding — and part of making those adventures successful is being prepared.
If you’re planning an international trip, take a few minutes to check the CDC Travelers’ Health site or speak with your healthcare provider.
It’s just another step in making sure your trip is as safe, smooth, and enjoyable as possible.
And if you need help planning the travel side of your trip — flights, excursions, or destinations — I’m always happy to help.
